Product Update: Using Swell In “Offline Mode”
Dear Swell Users:
Many of you have inquired if Swell can be used in an “offline mode” to use the app on an airplane or in the subway underground, where there is no data or Wi-Fi signal. Well, we have great news for you! Swell for iPhone already has this functionality built in. Let’s say you commute to work by subway or are preparing for a flight. On its own, whether you are connected to Wi-Fi or the data network, Swell will begin to download pieces of content for your personalized radio experience. We call this feature “Smart Wi-Fi Buffering” (see below.) If you’d like, you can go into Settings and enable “Wi-Fi only” mode which will make it so that Swell only downloads programs when you’re on a Wi-Fi network. With this power feature enabled, our users can now enjoy Swell while riding the NYC Subway, or the T in Boston, or the L in Chicago, and many other places. Additionally, Swell in “offline mode” may be of use to users who are traveling overseas and don’t want to tap into their roaming data plans, or for users who have more limited data plans.
Here are simple instructions on how to use this feature, along with some screenshots to help guide you:
Step 1: Open up the Swell app at home when you’re on Wi-Fi for over 2 minutes, either at night or in the morning before you hit the road for work.
Step 2: In the top left corner of the app, click on the Menu tray to reveal the Swell menu.
Step 3: At the top of the grey menu, you will see Swell working to add “skips” to your program session, which essentially means the app is downloading your programs and buffering them on the app so that you can enjoy them offline. We call this “Smart buffering over Wi-Fi” to help ensure you have the best audio experience when you’re on the go.
Step 4: Then, click on the the “Settings” bar in the menu.
Step 5: You can turn “on” Wi-Fi download only to enjoy Swell offline.
Voila, and there you have it. We hope you enjoy this feature of Swell, and please contact us with any questions or feedback!
